Does the age of my pet matter when it comes to what pet food to feed?

Feeding your puppy a raw diet can provide them with the nutrients they need to grow and develop properly. When starting your puppy on a raw diet, it's important to follow a few guidelines to avoid digestive upset. For adult dogs , a raw diet can provide them with the nutrients they need to maintain muscle, energy levels, and overall health. High-quality meat sources remain important, and vegetables and fruits can be included for fiber, vitamins, and minerals. However, keep in mind that dogs are primarily carnivores, so plant matter should be a smaller portion of the diet. Adequate hydration is also essential, and raw diets with high moisture content can contribute to overall water intake. Consider incorporating omega-3 fatty acids for joint health, especially in larger breeds prone to joint issues.

Senior dogs still need good-quality protein, but some may benefit from slightly lower levels to prevent excessive weight gain. Adjust fat content based on the individual's activity level and weight management needs. Continue supporting joint health with omega-3 fatty acids and consider adding bone broth or other supplements for joint support. Senior dogs may have lower energy requirements, so monitor their weight and adjust portion sizes accordingly. Probiotics and prebiotics can be beneficial for maintaining gut health, which may become more important as dogs age. Consider the texture of the food for dental health, and softer options or ground meats might be suitable for dogs with dental issues.

When feeding your pet a raw diet, it's important to consult with a veterinarian to tailor the diet to your individual dog's needs. Raw diets are effective in the management of some medical problems, especially gastrointestinal dysfunction. However, raw pet foods are not suitable for most owners or all pets, and some dogs and cats are healthier on traditional diets.
